Rihanna Declared National Hero
It has barely been two weeks since the Bajan bombshell, Rihanna Fenty, was honored as national hero for the island of Barbados. This feat, although seemingly out of left field, is long-coming and well deserved. The billionaire entrepreneur’s contributions to grassroots organizations is well documented. Over the years Fenty's charitable donations were highlighted but more than the mass of money given was her time, touch and visibility.
Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley told the crowd on November 29th, 2021, "On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you the designee for national hero of Barbados, Ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty." Rihanna’s reign just won’t let up!

Caribbean National heroes
Sarah Grant Hill is no longer the sole woman on this list of heroes for the island of Barbados. "The Right Excellent" as these heroes are formally referred to, are recognized as the most prominent figures in Caribbean history. As of today, there are only two living persons granted this title in Barbados. Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jamaica’s first National Hero, was recognized as the first black man to ‘awaken the dignity of the black race in Jamaica, North America and Africa’. This honor of national hero is of great significance and will transcend time and us all.
The implications on Rihanna’s legacy
The running joke of ‘will she make music again?’ is almost unfunny when the pop-star continues to break the mold. The most impressive part of the “Pon de Replay” artist turned global ambassador’s resume isn’t the $1.7 billion net worth Forbes estimates, but rather her charitable heart and dedication to leaving the world a little better than how she saw it; a moral, we can all adopt.
