Community Highlight: Maryland Diaper Bank

October, as you know it, is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer is still one of the most common ailments for women, transcending age, race and ethnicity. Although cases of diagnosis are similar among Black and White women, statistics show that Black women are more likely to die from the disease due to the severity of the early stages of the cancer, the Breast Cancer Gene mutation (or BRCA) a gene mutation which contributes to increased mortality, paired with delays of treatment and a lack of access to proper health care. Black women are not a monolith but numbers don’t lie. The data shows us that we all should actively assess our health, aiming to maintain healthy lifestyle habits. Life’s demands, the daily push and pull may make our lifestyle habits look different from the next person but remember, healthy is an outfit that looks different on everybody.

Although there may be environmental exposures outside of our control, there are still some lifestyle factors we can put in place for prevention. Modern science, checks and treatments more than ever are proven to help maintain the decrease of this deadly disease. With diet and exercise, adequate sleep, and pockets of love sprinkled into and throughout of lives, we can continue to fight the good fight, maintaining a healthy status. Lastly, ladies and gents, remember that stress management is also a key factor in the fight against breast cancer. Now let’s kick this episode off.
